Wedding and Event Insurance in Udaipur

A destination wedding in Udaipur commits large sums months in advance to venues, decorators, caterers and travel, most of it on terms that refund nothing if the dates move. Insurance can carry some of that risk, and the liability that comes with hundreds of guests on a heritage property, but only the parts the wording names.

What to know

What wedding insurance does

Wedding or event insurance is a package. Its central section pays the non-refundable costs already committed if the event is cancelled or postponed for a reason the policy names: fire or a natural calamity at the venue, or an accident or serious illness of the bride, groom or close family within a set period before the date. Other sections can cover damage to the venue's property for which the family is responsible, burglary of gifts and jewellery, personal accident, and liability to third parties.

What it does not do is just as important. Nothing pays when a wedding is called off by choice. Strikes, riots and civil disturbance are often excluded, and so is anything already known when the policy was bought. The sum insured should match the money actually at risk, which means listing the advances and their refund terms first.

For families and planners

Start with the contracts, not the policy. A venue that refunds most of an advance if the dates move needs less insurance than one that refunds nothing, and the force majeure clause decides who bears a flood or a government restriction. Insurance is bought for the gap the contracts leave.

Buy it when the large advances are paid, not in the final week. Cover usually excludes anything known when it starts, so a policy bought after a family member falls ill will not respond to that illness.

Planners who run several weddings a season can carry an annual liability policy for their own business, and should ask their decorators, caterers and fireworks suppliers for evidence of theirs.

For hotels, palaces and venues

A heritage property hosting a wedding carries its own exposures: hundreds of guests on terraces and staircases, temporary structures and lighting, kitchens catering at scale, and fireworks near old timber and fabric. The property's fire policy covers its own buildings and contents, but injury to a guest or damage to a guest's property is a liability claim, and a public liability policy is what responds to it.

Read the limit as well as the cover. A limit set for an ordinary hotel year may be thin for a season of large weddings, and food poisoning, which liability policies can treat specially, is worth checking by name. The property side is on our hotels and resorts page, linked below.

When something goes wrong

Notify the insurer as soon as a cause of cancellation arises, before cancelling contracts where possible, so the insurer can agree the steps. Keep every contract, receipt and cancellation letter: a cancellation claim is paid on the money shown to be lost, not on the budget.

For an injury or damage at the venue, record what happened and who was involved, and report it to the venue's insurer and your own. Do not admit liability on the spot; most liability policies require the insurer's consent before anything is promised.

Frequently asked questions

Is wedding insurance available in India?

Yes. Several general insurers, including ICICI Lombard and Bajaj General, sell wedding or event insurance covering cancellation or postponement for named causes, damage to property, burglary, personal accident and liability to third parties.

Does wedding insurance cover cancellation if the couple calls it off?

No. Policies pay only for the causes they name, such as fire, natural calamity or an accident to the couple or close family. A wedding called off by choice is not covered by any policy.

Who is liable if a guest is injured at the venue?

It depends on the cause: the venue for the state of its premises, a vendor for its own work, the organiser for how the event was run. Each should carry public liability cover for its own share, which is why planners ask vendors for proof of insurance.

When should we buy wedding insurance?

When the large non-refundable advances are paid. Policies exclude anything already known when they start, so cover bought late will not respond to a problem that has already begun.

Do you only advise families, or venues too?

Both. We advise families and planners on event cover, and hotels, palaces and venues on their property and liability programmes. Our office is in Udaipur, at 784 Rani Road.
