Insurance Broker for Mumbai Businesses
Mumbai is where India's insurers make their decisions, and where a great deal of the country's cargo starts and finishes. Both matter to how a programme gets placed.
Or request a callback. Free, no obligation, and we answer at any hour.
What to know
- Complex and large placements are decided at insurer head offices, most of which sit in Mumbai. Proximity to that decision matters when a risk needs to be argued rather than quoted.
- Marine cargo through JNPT and Nhava Sheva is the exposure we are asked about most by Mumbai clients, and the clause set decides the claim far more than the rate does.
- We are a broker, not an agent, and we are paid by the insurer rather than by you.
- Claims advocacy is the core of the practice, not an afterthought attached to a sale.
Marine cargo, which is most of what Mumbai asks us
The Incoterm on the sales contract decides whose policy responds, and it is not always the party who assumes it. Under FOB and CFR the risk passes to the buyer once the goods are on board, which means the seller still carries the inland leg from the factory to the port and frequently has no cover for it.
Under CIF the seller must insure, but only to Institute Cargo Clauses (C), the narrowest of the three. Clauses (C) is a named-perils cover: theft, non-delivery and most wetting fall outside it. Buyers regularly assume they hold all-risks cover and find out otherwise after a loss.
Where consignments are regular, an annual open policy is both cheaper per rupee carried and safer than voyage-by-voyage cover, because nothing travels uninsured because somebody forgot to arrange it.
Property and liability in a dense city
Mumbai premises tend to be smaller, taller and more expensive per square foot than the industrial sites we handle in Rajasthan, which changes the shape of the programme. Reinstatement cost bears little relationship to what the space cost to acquire.
Public liability exposure is higher where footfall is higher, and commercial leases in Mumbai frequently carry an insurance clause with a named minimum limit. Worth reading before the landlord quotes it back at you.
Business interruption deserves more attention here than it usually gets. Where an alternative premises is expensive and slow to find, the indemnity period needs to reflect that rather than default to twelve months.
How the relationship actually works
By WhatsApp, phone and email for the day-to-day, which is how commercial insurance is transacted in practice. Send the existing schedule and we will tell you what is wrong with it before we quote anything.
In person for risk inspections, claims and placements that warrant it.
At claim time we handle documentation, intimation within the policy timelines, the surveyor, and the argument about quantum when the first offer looks light.
Frequently asked questions
Do you have an office in Mumbai?
Yes, at D.N. Nagar, Andheri West, which is useful for insurer meetings and port work. Our head office is in Udaipur at 784 Rani Road and remains where the practice is run from. Most work is transacted remotely either way.
Why use a Rajasthan broker for a Mumbai business?
Because what you are buying is the reading of the wording and the fight at claim time, not proximity. We are independent across India's insurers, we are paid by the insurer rather than by you, and we have been placing and defending commercial programmes since 2004.
What is the difference between a broker and an agent?
An agent represents one insurer and sells that insurer's products. A broker represents you, compares cover and wording across the market, and acts for you when a claim is disputed. The remuneration comes from the insurer in both cases, so a broker costs you no more.
Can you help with a marine cargo claim already in progress?
Yes. The first days matter most: photographs, a survey call, notice to the carrier within the contractual time bar, and preservation of the packing. Send us what you have on WhatsApp and we will tell you what is still recoverable.
